Atmospheric River Floods Home In San Francisco
An atmospheric flood hit the area with widespread flooding to homes and streets. Our clients home basically had a river running through it at one point until the rains subsided. Atmospheric floods occur when warm water evaporates from the ocean and concentrates into narrow fast-moving air currents that dump heavy rains on inland areas. Storm drains cannot handle the volume and floods inundate streets and homes.
The client called SERVPRO about the flood damage in her San Francisco home as soon as she was able to gain access to her home. She was forced to wait until she could navigate flooded streets and traffic was allowed. The bottom floor of her home was severely damaged. Doors were forced open by the water, and many of her belongings washed away. Any remaining furniture was discarded due to the substantial damage.
Our SERVPRO team began by removing all of the mud and debris in the home, including furniture that remained. Tiled areas could be washed and dried. Hardwood floors were removed, including the subfloor due to the damage and high moisture levels. We removed the lower three feet of drywall for the same reason. Next came new doors and windows. Our team focused on drying the house and reducing the moisture levels with dehumidifiers.
Full reconstruction and restoration (in a General Contractor roll) of the home involved verifying all electrical circuits and laying new subfloor. Next, came new drywall and insulation, and of course, new hardwood floors. SERVPRO provided regular status updates on progress to the homeowner, which was passed along to their insurance company. The homeowner also had pictures of the original pre-flood condition of the home, which helped immensely with restoration and insurance claims.
The main focus was on the inside of the home. The owners wanted to move back into their home as soon as possible. Outside, landscapers were also making repairs. The team washed the outside walls, and the debris left by the flood was removed. Next, we restored the gardens and entertainment areas.
