Sewage Spill Cleanup
Our SERVPRO of Belmont / San Carlos expert technicians are certified and trained to follow USA-EPA, OSHA and IICRC guidelines and special “standards” regarding sewage spill cleanup. The EPA is concerned with public safety. OSHA is concerned about the health and safety of restoration workers and persons in proximity to cleanup worksites. The IICRC is the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. It is an international association considered to be the leader in training and education for the mitigation and restoration industry. The IICRC classifies sewage as: category 3 water, in their S500 Standards & Reference Manual. Please review our summary of this:
Sewage spills are called Category 3 water. They represent grossly unsanitary water that contains pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. It has the potential for causing major illness and infections in some persons. Its presence and lingering effects can cause the affected building’s environment to become unhealthy. Thus, highly porous and most semi-porous building materials should be removed and replaced. Sewage or unsanitary water entering a building from outdoors or from a toilet bowl overflow will be extracted and the carpet and pad will be removed and disposed if it were wetted. Cabinets and vanities will be carefully detached and removed while the surrounding wet walls and insulation will be cutout and disposed. The remaining building materials and framing will be cleaned, sanitized and dried before the damaged building is reconstructed.
The drying process is performed with great care to prevent bacteria particles from becoming airborne. Our special air cleaning equipment is installed at each Category 3 work location to insure that health and safety requirements are met.
